Timber casement windows come with many benefits – they look good on any property, they last a long time, they are environmentally friendly and more. These windows, however, need a lot of care. Because they are made out of wood they can easily rot. There are some things that you can do to make sure that your timber casement windows last a lifetime:
• Make sure that you inspect your windows at least once a year. You should be looking for signs of root, cracking paint, broken cords and any other damage that may be present. If you notice any make sure to deal with it without any delay.
• If you notice any parts have decayed you should deal with it immediately. So long as it is a small area you can dig out the decayed area with a chisel and then fill the hole with epoxy. To prevent any further decay you should ensure that your timber casement windows are well covered with waterproof paint.
• Your windows should be painted every five years if you want them to last. Make sure that they coat of pit isn’t too thick otherwise in the winter when they wood swells they will get stuck.
• Before timber casement windows are painted they have to be properly prepared. Remove old paint using sandpaper and smooth the frame down properly. You can take the opportunity to treat the wood and also do any repairs that are needed.
• If you live in an area that rains heavily and is humid your windows will need more care. The same goes for if you live in a place that has lots of dust – you will need to clean your windows more frequently.
